I love those new hollows you are making Astrid. Our glass group has a "challenge" each month, and the challenge for January was hollows. We had one lady who made a hollow button - on a two pronged button mandrel! It was a really fun exercise. This next month is shards, and I am sooo shard challenged.
Hi Jane, Thank you:) I really have not made hollows in a long time and I don't like making them on the mandrel. After seeing David Patches murrini vases on FB I was challenged to make some murrini beads. I don't want my beads to look like his vases but to create the windows into the bead. I think I like doing this a lot, they are made off mandrel but totally made in the flame, no fusing in the kiln. There is just something about hollow beads! I am afraid to say that this could be a defining moment in my beadmaking, but I know I don't tend to stick too long with any design, so we will see....
I love making shards, To make them a little easier to blow, make a hollow bead at the end of your hollow mandrel, you won't struggle to blow, use a controlled pressure when blowing so it does not blow out to fast and pop like a bubblegum ;)I know Joe Avenue has a tut on blowing shards,and he makes huge shards so you might like that tut?

Hi Astrid, bery beautiful beads. I think it's a quite difficult moment when you melt the bead off the hollow mandrel, close it and put it on your spacer bead, isn't it? Hugs, Iris
Iris you are right, I don't have the right tools such as a pair of "hot Finger" like they use for holding the marble , I don't know if they would work on this shape I must find out. I don't attach it to a spacer bead but make a loop straight onto the bead. I have thought of making a spacer bead on a mandrel but my oven does not have a flip door so it is difficult for me to keep it hot and take it out of the kiln...

In your last few posts my thoughts were "How did she do that?" Be ready for those questions in class at Portia's.
